Yuri Lyubimov was a theatre and film director, actor, educator, and one of the most influential reformers of Russian theatre. In 1964, he was appointed artistic director of the Moscow Drama and Comedy Theatre, later known as the Taganka Theatre. Throughout his work, Lyubimov collaborated with an extraordinary ensemble of actors, including Vladimir Vysotsky, Zinaida Slavina, Leonid Filatov, Valery Zolotukhin, Alla Demidova, Veniamin Smekhov, Ivan Bortnik, Boris Khmelnitsky, Nikolai Gubenko, Semyon Farada, Rasmi Dzhabrailov, Ivan Dykhovichny, Gottlieb Roninson, Lyubov Selyutina, Maria Politseymako, Vitaly Shapovalov, Nina Shatskaya, and many others. Scenography for his productions was created by renowned stage designers David Borovsky, Vladimir Talalay, and Enar Stenberg. During his years at the Taganka Theatre, Yuri Lyubimov staged more than 50 productions. As a director, he placed great emphasis on poetic imagery and metaphor, frequently exploring existential questions of human life. All of this created an atmosphere of inner freedom and artistic innovation. This album presents sketches, photographs, posters, and programs from landmark productions by Yuri Lyubimov at the Taganka Theatre from the collection of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum: “The Good Person of Szechwan” (1964), “Antimires” (1965), “What Is to Be Done?” (1970), “Hamlet” starring Vladimir Vysotsky in the title role (1971), “The Master and Margarita” (1977), as well as materials from other performances staged by the director.
