Dmitriy Brusnikin was born on November 17, 1957, in Potsdam, where his father was in military service. In 1974 he entered the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology in Zelenograd, and in 1975 started to work at a folk theatre. Later, Brusnikin took an academic leave at the institute and started to work as a scene machinist at the Theatre-Studio of Cinema Actors. In 1978, Dmitriy entered Moscow Art Theater School (Oleg Yefremov's class).
Since the second studying year, Brusnikin was participating in the Moscow Art Theater performances. In 1982, he joined the troupe.
In 1988, Brusnikin worked at the Theatre-Studio "Chelovek", where he made his debut as director with "Waiting for Godot" (based on the play by Samuel Beckett).
Right after finishing Moscow Art Theater School, Dmitriy began his teaching career there as an assistant. Since 1993 he taught students acting skills. He also led courses together with his classmate Roman Kozak (in 1999, 2003, and 2007).
In 2015, the director created the independent non-state theater "Brusnikin's Workshop". The theater does not have its own stage and cooperates with various venues and stage directors.
On August 7, 2018, shortly before his death, Dmitriy Brusnikin was appointed the artistic director of the Praktika theatre.
