Nina Efimova (born Simonovich) was a Russian graphic artist, puppet designer, and puppeteer. Born in 1877 in Saint Petersburg into a family of educators. Her cousin was the artist Valentin Serov. Nina Efimova received her art education at the Stroganov School (graduated in 1900) and the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (graduated in 1911). She also honed her skills in Parisian painting studios, including the studio of Henri Matisse. Nina Efimova's theatrical career began in 1917, when she and her husband, the artist Ivan Efimov, started performing with "petrushka" puppets, utilizing a "reed" control principle. In 1918, the couple founded the Puppet and Shadow Theatre in Moscow. From 1928 to 1942, Nina Efimova was actively involved in pedagogical work, teaching shadow theatre methodology at the courses of the House of Artistic Education, the Museum of Maternity and Infancy, the All-Russian Theatre Society, and the Mosestrada courses. She worked extensively in the field of silhouette theatre, creating moving silhouette compositions for various museums and exhibitions, and also designed interiors for public buildings in Moscow. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's online collection features puppets created by Nina Semonovich-Efimova in collaboration with her husband, Ivan Efimov, as well as photographs and other materials reflecting the artist's contribution to the development of Russian puppet theatre.
