Ivan Vsevolozhsky was a Russian theatre administrator and stage designer. He graduated from St. Petersburg University and began his career in the diplomatic service. In 1881, he was appointed Director of the Imperial Theatres. During his tenure, he opened the New Theatre in Moscow for young vocalists, established opera classes for the Mariinsky Theatre chorus, closed the financially draining Italian opera troupe, and expanded the chorus and orchestra. Alongside his administrative duties, he worked on the artistic design of productions. He created over a thousand costume sketches, including those for “The Sleeping Beauty”, “The Queen of Spades”, and “Iolanta”. He also contributed to the detailed development of the libretto for the ballet “The Sleeping Beauty”. On his initiative, a production council was established, bringing together the author, composer, designer, and choreographer during the preparation of a production. Additionally, he participated in the creation of the Yearbook of the Imperial Theatres and helped found the Central Library of the Imperial Theatres. In 1899, he was transferred to the post of Director of the Hermitage, but even there he continued to stage productions that were later transferred to the Mariinsky stage. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds archival documents, sketches, and letters related to the life and work of Ivan Vsevolozhsky.
