Vadim Ryndin was an outstanding Soviet theatre designer, scenographer, and educator. People's Artist of the USSR (1962), academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1964), and Stalin Prize laureate (1950). Born in 1902, in Moscow, he studied at the Free Art and Technical Workshops in Voronezh (1918–1922) and later at VKHUTEMAS (1922–1924). He was an active member of the art associations Makovets and Four Arts. During the 1930s–1950s, Ryndin served as chief designer at the country's leading theatres: the Chamber Theatre (1931–1934), the Vakhtangov Theatre (1935–1944 and 1947–1958), and the Mayakovsky Theatre (1944–1947). From 1953, he also became the chief designer of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR. For his design for the performance of "Conspiracy of the Doomed" at the Vakhtangov Theatre, the artist was awarded the Stalin Prize.
