Volf Vitaly, р. 1933 г.

Biography:

Vitaly Volf is a Soviet and Russian graphic artist, recognized as a major creator of theatre posters and film posters in the second half of the 20th century. His childhood was marked by political repression: in 1937 his parents were arrested, his father was executed, and his mother spent many years in labor camps; Volf himself grew up in an orphanage. He studied at the Moscow Secondary Art School and later at the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute (1959–1963), Department of Graphics, under B. A. Dekhtyaryov; he began exhibiting in 1957. In the 1960s he worked in graphic design (books, visual identities, trademarks), and from the mid‑1960s poster art became his main field. In the 1970s–1980s he produced theatre and film posters for Reklamfilm, Exportfilm, and Goskontsert USSR, collaborating with theatres in many cities; he created more than 250 posters in total. In the 1990s he turned to book illustration and easel painting. Following a jubilee solo exhibition marking his 90th anniversary, he received the Gold Medal of the Moscow Union of Artists (MOSKh). The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum holds a number of his posters, including works made for the Natalya Sats Children’s Musical Theatre, the Pushkin Drama Theatre, and the Nikitsky Gates Theatre.
