Shchepkina-Kupernik Tatiana. 1874-1952

Biography:

Tatiana Shchepkina-Kupernik was a writer, playwright, poet, and translator, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, and the great-granddaughter of the eminent actor Mikhail Shchepkin. Born in 1874 in Moscow, her theatrical activity began at an early age: in 1892, her play "Summer Picture" was staged at the Maly Theatre, and during the 1892–1893 season, she performed as an actress at the Korsh Theatre. She was known for her one-act plays in verse, such as "The Revenge of Cupid", "Eternity in a Moment", and "A Happy Woman", as well as poetry collections that were awarded the Pushkin Prize by the Academy of Sciences. A special place in Tatiana Shchepkina-Kupernik's legacy is her translation work. She translated about sixty plays into Russian, gaining wide recognition for her free and popular verse translations of Edmond Rostand's dramas ("The Distant Princess", "Cyrano de Bergerac", "The Eaglet", "Chantecler"). It was through her translations that the works of Shakespeare, Molière, Lope de Vega, Calderón, and other Western classics also appeared on the Russian stage. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's online collection features archival documents, sketches, photographs, and other materials related to Tatiana Shchepkina-Kupernik and her theatrical and translation work.
