Alexander Deyneka was a Soviet artist, painter, graphic artist, and muralist. He was born in Kursk into the family of a railway worker. He first studied at a railway school, but soon chose to pursue art and enrolled in the Kharkiv Art School. Later, he continued his education in Moscow at Vkhutemas. In the 1920s, he worked actively as a graphic artist, creating illustrations and caricatures and traveling widely across the country. One of his major works from this period was “The Defense of Petrograd”. During the 1920s and 1930s, he frequently explored themes of sport and physical culture, depicting movement and the dynamics of the human body. Among his well-known works are “Football”, “The Runner”, and “The Female Athlete”. He designed the stage production of Vladimir Mayakovsky’s play “The Bathhouse”, as well as “Birthday” by the Tur brothers. During the Great Patriotic War, he created paintings on military themes, including “The Defense of Sevastopol”. In the postwar years, he returned to sports and peaceful subjects, producing the painting “Relay Race on Ring B”. He also worked in sculpture and monumental art, creating mosaics for Moscow metro stations and major public buildings. Alexander Deyneka was active as a teacher, lecturing at Moscow art institutions and holding the title of professor. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds costume designs for “The Bathhouse” created by Alexander Deyneka, as well as programs, playbills, and photographs related to the production.
