From the late nineteenth century, Astrakhan was an important transit point on the route by which Baku oil was transported to the central regions of the Russian Empire. During the icy storm of 12-14 November 1910, around two dozen vessels sank at the Astrakhan roadstead, and more than three hundred people lost their lives. The museum collection preserves a programme from Baku stating that “one quarter of the net proceeds will go to the families of those who perished at the Astrakhan roadstead during the terrible catastrophe.” The thematic choice of the play is especially expressive: the drama The Good Hope by H. Heijermans was staged. The plot centres on the grief of families who have lost loved ones on a sunken vessel.
