Annotation:

The earthquake that struck Andijan in December 1902 was one of the most severe seismic disasters in Central Asia in the early twentieth century. Several thousand people were killed in the city and surrounding villages, and tens of thousands of houses were destroyed. Soon after the disaster, relief committees were established, while donations arrived from different parts of the Russian Empire through institutions, newspaper editorial offices, and private individuals. Andijan was located in Fergana Oblast of the Turkestan Governor-Generalship of the Russian Empire. The Barnaul programme therefore provides material evidence of an interregional wave of public relief, as the two cities were separated by a distance of approximately 1,600 km.
