Annotation:

On 13 June 1887, a vocal, musical, and literary evening was held at Smirnov’s Garden in Nizhny Novgorod for the benefit of the victims of the great fire that had swept through Kostroma in May, spreading rapidly through the city in strong winds. The fire destroyed a substantial part of the urban fabric, including more than a hundred private houses, buildings of a monastery and the ecclesiastical consistory, as well as other public structures. The Nizhny Novgorod poster is particularly interesting for its detailed description of how the fundraising was organised. The organisers promised in advance to publish information about these contributions and the final proceeds of the charity evening in the Nizhegorodsky Birzhevoy Listok, thereby making the fundraising process transparent.
