On 23 January 1909, a benefit performance was held at the Irkutsk City Theatre for the residents of Sicily and Calabria affected by the devastating Messina earthquake. The Irkutsk poster is one of the objects in the museum collection that particularly vividly demonstrates the geographical reach of public relief efforts. The performance took place just 39 days after the disaster, in a city located approximately 6,700 kilometres from Italy. It was organised by a committee chaired by A. E. Selivanova, the wife of the Governor-General of Irkutsk. The charity evening was held at the Irkutsk City Theatre, a building that had itself been constructed in 1897 largely through private donations from local residents.
