The severe flood of June 1912 had a devastating impact on Nizhneudinsk in Irkutsk Province. Heavy rains and snowmelt in the mountains caused the Uda River to overflow its banks, and a significant part of the town was submerged. Despite the efforts of the local fire society, which assumed rescue functions, the disaster resulted in loss of life, the death of livestock, and the destruction of grain supplies. This catastrophe prompted a response from the dramatic troupe of the Society of Popular Entertainments from Irkutsk. The poster for G. Sudermann’s comedy “Honour”, dated 11 July 1912, states that “the entire net proceeds will be donated for the benefit of those affected by the flood in the town of Nizhneudinsk”. The poster also provides valuable material for social history: seats in the gallery started at 10 kopecks, while the most expensive box seats cost 8 rubles. For comparison, an annual subscription to a local newspaper with delivery cost 6 rubles.
