Annotation:

The playbill from Kamenets-Podolsk is notable for its fundraising appeal for the victims of the disaster in the city of Verny (present-day Almaty). In early summer 1887, the city was struck by a devastating earthquake. More than 2,600 buildings were destroyed, including the gymnasium, churches, the governor’s residence, and the hospital. More than three hundred people were killed, around a third of them children. In this case, however, the funds were raised not through a theatrical performance but during a public fête. To attract visitors, the organizers advertised prizes to be awarded to the winners of various competitions. Thus, a silver cup was offered for a “race along a plank carrying a bucket,” while the winner of a running race was to receive “a watch as a prize”.
