In late February 1914, a hurricane, followed by severe storms and gales, caused a major rise in water levels in the south of the Russian Empire. The disaster led to numerous casualties and considerable economic damage across the vast territories of the Kuban region, the North Caucasus, and Astrakhan Province. The force of the disaster was so great that, on the night of 12-13 March, the storm washed away part of the Yeysk Spit on the Sea of Azov and separated it from the mainland, effectively turning it into an island. Fundraising for the victims took place in different parts of the country. Of particular interest is a fragile program preserved in the museum collection from Krasnovodsk, a city that was also affected by the storm. It is unusual in terms of its material as well: the text was printed not on paper, but on satin. Local amateur performers organized a theatrical event “for the benefit of those affected by the hurricane on the Azov coast”.
