Annotation:

The charity performance held on 15 March 1912 in the town of Kozlov (now Michurinsk) was part of a broader wave of public relief efforts aimed at addressing the consequences of the severe crop failure of 1911, caused by drought. Private donations supplemented government assistance: the authorities introduced public works, the sale of grain at reduced prices, and food loans. The effects of the crop failure became particularly acute in the spring of 1912, when household reserves had been depleted and grain was needed for spring sowing. Another distinctive feature of the Kozlov poster is the venue of the charity evening. After the town theatre was closed following a fire in 1910, Kozlov was left without a permanent theatre stage. The charity performance was therefore held in a “modern electro-theatre,” that is, in a cinema.
