On 29 January 1900, at the Nakhichevan City Theatre, a company of Russian dramatic actors under the direction of Nikolai Sinelnikov gave a performance “for the benefit of those affected by the earthquake in Akhalkalaki Uezd”. Spectators were also encouraged to make additional donations: at the bottom of the poster, a prominent notice stated that “any payment in excess of the stated price will be gratefully accepted”. The devastating Akhalkalaki earthquake itself occurred on 19 December 1899 (31 December according to the New Style calendar) and affected the southern Caucasus. Modern studies estimate its magnitude at approximately 6, while the intensity in the epicentral area reached 9. The villages of Akhalkalaki Uezd were particularly badly affected: 247 people were killed, 664 houses were destroyed.
