The program states that the performance was a charity event held “for the benefit of the victims in Poltava who had suffered from the flood”, which is consistent with the city’s natural topography: the low-lying districts of Poltava associated with the Vorskla floodplain were prone to inundation. The program is also notable because the charity evening was connected with the professional theatrical world. The troupe was led by A. A. Levitsky, an operetta performer, stage director, and impresario known for his appearances in Moscow in M. V. Lentovsky’s company. Levitsky appears in the programme not only as the head of the troupe but also as a performer: he played the leading role in the popular operetta Haji Murat by I. Dekker-Shenk. Interestingly, the plot of this work revolved around a love intrigue and was in no way connected either with Leo Tolstoy’s novella of the same title or with the historical figure of the Avar military leader Haji Murat.
