The poster from Rylsk is of particular interest because it links an amateur performance with two disasters experienced by the town: flooding after heavy rains and a cholera epidemic that arrived from the southern regions. The charity collection, organized at the Rylsk Public Assembly by amateur dramatic enthusiasts, shows that the local community sought to respond to the disaster. The person in charge of the performance was the zemstvo doctor A. I. Kalinovsky, who had opened a private clinic in the town, which further underscores the connection between the theatrical evening and practices of public relief. Ticket prices ranged from 30 kopecks to 3 rubles; for comparison, the monthly salary of a feldsher at that time (according to medical reports) was about 30 rubles.
