Annotation:

The Messina earthquake was one of the most devastating disasters to occur abroad. With a magnitude of approximately 7.5, it struck the Strait of Messina between Sicily and the Italian mainland. The earthquake devastated the city of Messina and numerous communities in Calabria, including Palmi. Russian sailors whose ships were stationed in the area responded immediately to the disaster, taking an active part in rescue operations and in setting up camps for survivors. The disaster also aroused considerable sympathy in the Russian Empire. Of particular interest is a large, metre-high poster from the town of Karachev announcing a fundraiser “for the benefit of those affected by the earthquake in Sicily and Calabria”. The poster stated that “the hall will be decorated with Russian and Italian national flags and greenery”.
