The largest mining disaster in Russian history is considered to be the explosion and underground fire at the Rykovsky Mine near Yuzovka in the Donbas. The catastrophe occurred on 18 June 1908. The miners, anticipating disaster, had warned the management of the Ekaterinovka Mining and Industrial Society that gas was accumulating in the mines, but the response came too late. The accumulated methane and coal dust exploded. As a result of the blast, the collapse, the fire, and gas poisoning, 271 of the 450 miners who were underground lost their lives. Local amateur actors from the mining community organized a performance of Ostrovsky’s comedy "In a Busy Place" in the school building "for the benefit of the workers’ families."
