The playbill from Alexandrovsk-on-Sakhalin records a charity performance held on 15 February 1911 to raise funds for victims of the devastating Kemin earthquake in the Semirechye Oblast. One of the most powerful continental earthquakes of the twentieth century, it reached a magnitude of about 10 and caused widespread destruction, landslides, and hundreds of deaths. What makes this playbill particularly striking is the enormous distance between the disaster area and the place where aid was collected. News of the catastrophe in Central Asia reached distant Sakhalin, thousands of kilometres away, where an amateur performance was organized in response. The entire proceeds were donated to the earthquake victims, demonstrating how charitable initiatives could connect even the most remote parts of the Russian Empire.
