Carlo Gozzi was an Italian playwright who became known for his fairy-tale plays in the fiaba genre. He was born in Venice into an aristocratic but financially modest family. In his youth, he served in the army, then returned to his native city and devoted himself to literature and the theatre. Carlo Gozzi drew on the traditions of commedia dell’arte, valuing folk poetry and theatrical improvisation. He opposed the realist trend in drama, believing that the stage should preserve fantasy and theatrical convention. His greatest success came with the play “Turandot”, based on an Eastern legend. Among his other well-known works are “The Love for Three Oranges”, “The Raven”, and “The King Stag”. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds a large number of items related to stage productions of Carlo Gozzi’s works.
