Yury Bakhrushin was a ballet historian, theatre critic, and pedagogue, and the son of Alexey Bakhrushin, the founder of the Theatre museum. Born in 1896 in Moscow into a well-known merchant family, he was educated at the Konstantin Voskresensky Real School and the Lazarev Institute, and also studied painting at the Prechistensky Workers' Courses. He began his theatrical career in 1918 as an assistant head of the production department of the Bolshoi Theatre, and later headed the production and literary departments of the Konstantin Stanislavsky Opera Studio. From the mid-1920s, he dedicated himself to the study of ballet history, collecting unique documents and publishing the memoirs of prominent stage figures such as Karl Valts, Adsm Glushkovsky, and Ivan Valberkh. From 1943, Yury Bakhrushin was actively engaged in pedagogical activities, teaching the history of ballet theatre at the Moscow Choreographic School, GITIS, and the school of the USSR Folk Dance Ensemble, mentoring many outstanding figures of Soviet ballet. The magnum opus of his life was the book "History of Russian Ballet" (1965), which remains a fundamental textbook covering the development of ballet art in Russia from its origins to 1917. In his later years, he researched the history of provincial ballet theatre and the formation of the Moscow ballet school. An important addition to the author's scholarly works is his own "Memoirs", published posthumously, which reveal unique details of Moscow's theatrical life and the history of the creation of Alexei Bakhrushin's museum collection. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's collection contains numerous photographs, archival documents, and other materials related to the life and work of Yuri Bakhrushin and his unique contribution to the preservation and study of Russian theatrical heritage.
