Lermontov Mikhail. 1814-1841

Biography:

Mikhail Lermontov was a Russian poet, prose writer, playwright, and artist. Born in Moscow, he spent his childhood at his grandmother Elizaveta Arsenyeva's estate in Tarkhany. From 1830 to 1832, he studied at Moscow University before enrolling in the School of Guards Ensigns and Cavalry Cadets in St. Petersburg. Lermontov gained widespread recognition in 1837 following the publication of his poem "Death of the Poet", written in response to the death of Alexander Pushkin. The poem led to his exile to the Caucasus, where he gathered impressions that would later find expression in many of his works. Lermontov's literary legacy encompasses poetry, prose, and drama. His best-known works include the narrative poems "Mtsyri" and "The Demon", the novel "A Hero of Our Time", and the play "Masquerade". His writing had a profound influence on Russian literature, and many of his works have inspired theatrical productions and musical adaptations. In 1840, Lermontov published the only collection of his poetry to appear during his lifetime. In July 1841, he was killed in a duel with Nikolai Martynov in Pyatigorsk. The collection of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum includes posters, scenery sketches and costume designs, photographs, and other items related to theatrical productions based on the works of Mikhail Lermontov.
