Sergei Diaghilev was a Russian theatrical figure who played a significant role in promoting Russian art abroad. He received a law degree from St. Petersburg University and was interested in music, painting, and art history. At the end of the nineteenth century, he became one of the founders of the “Mir Iskusstva” (“World of Art”) association and edited its journal. From the early 1900s, Diaghilev organized exhibitions of Russian artists in Europe and then began presenting the Ballets Russes — concerts, opera, and ballet performances in Paris and other cities. In 1909, the first ballet season was a great success and marked the beginning of regular international tours. In 1911, he founded the permanent company “Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes”. Its productions involved prominent choreographers, composers, and artists, including Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst, Pablo Picasso, and many others. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds photographs and letters of Sergei Diaghilev, as well as a large number of items related to his work.
