Alexei Bakhrushin was a Russian collector, bibliophile, merchant, and patron of the arts. Born in 1853 in Moscow into the family of Pyotr Bakhrushin. He was a cousin of Alexei Bakhrushin, the founder of the Theatre Museum. Studied at the private boarding school of Edward Repman. He was a co-owner of the “Partnership of A. Bakhrushin Sons Leather and Cloth Manufactories”. In 1872, he began assembling his collection of books and various works of art. In his memoirs, Yuri Bakhrushin described Alexei Petrovich as follows: “In his collecting, Alexei Petrovich was a fanatic. He was interested not so much in the object itself as in the process of finding it and hunting it down. He undertook complicated journeys and made extraordinary acquaintances in order to obtain some breathtaking rarity for his collection”. His collection included ancient manuscripts, porcelain and bronze objects, early printed books, portraits, miniatures, and other valuable items. For example, it consisted of 30,000 volumes of books and around 350 portraits. Alexei Bakhrushin was a member of the Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature, the Moscow Bibliographic Circle, the Historical Museum, a member of the Society of Art Lovers, and other organizations. After his death in 1904, his collection was transferred to the Historical Museum. Between 1911 and 1913, the Catalogue of the Books of Alexei Petrovich Bakhrushin was published. Manuscripts, letters, and photographs of Alexei Bakhrushin are preserved in the collection of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum.
