Nikolai Alekseyevich Slichenko (1934-2021) is considered as a very significant person not only in the professional theater community, but in the whole Gypsy diaspora in Russia and post-soviet territories. Sometimes he is jokingly called “the main Gypsy of the USSR” because of his media popularity.
For many decades, Slichenko developed his talents at the "Romen Theater" in Moscow. He first came to this theater as a sixteen-year-old boy in 1951, but after 25 years he became artistic director and remained at this post for the rest of his life.
A combination of talent, charm and charisma provided Slichenko great success in the soviet times. He could sing and dance very well, sometimes he starred in films and directed performances as well. Some of his performances continue to take place nowadays. One of Slichenko's most famous performances - “We Are Gypsies” - was directed in cooperation with the “Romen” founder Ivan Rom-Lebedev. This show has been running for 40 years on the stage of “Romen” and still enjoys real success with the audience.
In our museum you can find plenty of photos of Nikolai Slichenko in life and on stage. For instance, one of his earliest roles - the officer Chango from “Broken Whip” (1955) and Vasil from “Gypsy Aza” (1957). Furthermore, there are some photos of Slichenko at concerts from the 1960s to the 2000s.
