Joseph Shidlo was a Soviet stage actor and pedagogue, Honored Artist of the RSFSR and the Uzbek SSR. Born in 1894, he was a student of Vsevolod Meyerhold. He dedicated his creative life to the stage, becoming an actor at the Moscow GOSET (State Jewish Theatre). In the 1930s, he was also engaged in pedagogical work, teaching at the Palace of Artistic Self-Activity for Children of the Soviet District (where Yury Katin-Yartsev, among others, studied). Among his theatrical roles were Commissioner Bocharov ("Professor Polezhaev"), Moses ("The Spaniards"), The Stage Manager ("The Tenth Commandment"), and Todres ("Three Raisins"). The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's online collection features sketches for performances featuring Joseph Shidlo, as well as a lithograph depicting the actor as Moses.
