Uralov Ilya. 1872-1920

Biography:

Ilya Uralov (born Konkov) was a stage actor, renowned for his leading roles on the stages of prominent imperial and private theatres in the early 20th century. Born in 1872 in the town of Orsk into the family of an Orenburg Cossack, he wandered across Russia in his youth, taking on odd jobs. In the 1890s, in Ashgabat, he joined a touring provincial theatre troupe, adopting the stage pseudonym Uralov. In 1904, he became an actor at the Vera Komissarzhevskaya Theatre in Saint Petersburg, where he attracted public attention with his performances in plays by Maxim Gorky. In 1907, he moved to the Moscow Art Theatre under Konstantin Stanislavsky, playing leading roles, including the Mayor in "The Government Inspector". In 1911, he left the Moscow Art Theatre and returned to Saint Petersburg to join the troupe of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. There he successfully performed leading parts in plays by Alexander Ostrovsky, Denis Fonvizin, Ivan Turgenev and Maxim Gorky. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's online collection features photographs of the actor as the Mayor in "The Government Inspector," as well as Alexander Golovin's sketch of Ilya Uralov's costume for the role of Dikiy in "The Storm".
