Arkhangelsky Nikolay. 1914-1982

Biography:

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Arkhangelsky was a Soviet theater designer. He graduated from the theater and decorative department of the Saratov Art School. From 1945, he worked at the Saratov Lenin Komsomol Theatre for Young Spectators, and from 1957, he became the theatre's chief designer. He also was a member of the USSR Union of Artists. During his career, he designed numerous productions, including "The Minor" by Denis Fonvizin, "The Young Guard" by Alexander Fadeyev, and "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. In 1952, he was awarded the Stalin Prize. His most famous work was the scenery design for the play "The Scarlet Flower". The production continues to be performed on the stage of the Saratov Theatre for Young Spectators and has had over 1,400 performances. The sceneries are still reproduced from the original sketches and drawings of Nikolai Arkhangelsky. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection includes sketches of costumes and scenery designs created by Nikolai Arkhangelsky, as well as playbills, programs, and photographs of productions designed by the artist.
