Barkhin Sergey. 1938-2020

Biography:

Sergey Mikhailovich Barkhin was a Soviet scenographer, architect, and writer. He was the brother of costume designer Tatyana Barkhina. Sergey was born in Moscow and studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute. He initially worked in his profession, but later turned to scenography and book illustration. Among his first stage designs were “The Narodovoltsy” by Alexander Svobodin at the Sovremennik Theatre, as well as “Tartuffe” at the Taganka Theatre. In the 1970s he worked in theatres in Moscow, Vilnius, Saratov, and other cities. During this period he designed such productions as “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at the Sovremennik Theatre and “The Tsar’s Hunt” at the Mossovet Theatre. Later, Barkhin became chief artist of the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre, and in 1995 he was appointed chief artist of the Bolshoi Theatre. Together with David Borovsky, he worked on the design of the Vsevolod Meyerhold Apartment Museum. Over the course of his career, Sergey Barkhin designed more than two hundred theatre productions. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum’s collection contains the artist’s sketches as well as photographs of stage scenes from productions he designed.
