Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich of Russia (literary pseudonym K. R.) was a member of the Russian Imperial House, Adjutant General, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (from 1889), poet, translator, and playwright. Born in 1858, in Strelna, he was passionate about literature and theatre from an early age. He made his poetic debut in 1882 under the initials K. R., which became his permanent literary pseudonym. His lyrics, distinguished by melodiousness and classical structure, were set to music by Sergei Rachmaninoff and César Cui. Literary translation occupied a significant place in Konstantin Konstantinovich's life: his Russian translations of works by Schiller, Goethe, and Shakespeare are well-known. His translation of "Hamlet," published in 1899, has been reprinted numerous times. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum's online collection features archival documents, including letters from the Grand Duke to Vladimir Telyakovsky, director of the Imperial Theatres, and sheet music for Pyotr Tchaikovsky's romance "I Opened the Window," with lyrics by Konstantin Konstantinovich.
