Mikhail Zharov was a Soviet actor and director, People’s Artist of the USSR. In 1919, he graduated from the studio at the Theatre of the Cultural and Educational Union of Workers’ Organizations. He worked in various theatres, including the Meyerhold Theatre, the Baku Workers’ Theatre, and the Moscow Kamerny Theatre, where he also directed productions. From 1938, he was an actor of the Maly Theatre. On stage, he performed both comic and dramatic roles. At the Maly Theatre, he appeared in plays by Gorky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Ostrovsky, and other playwrights. Zharov was one of the leading actors of Soviet cinema. Among his notable film roles were performances in “Road to Life”, “The Storm”, “The Return of Maxim”, “Peter the Great”, “Ivan the Terrible”, “The Village Detective”, and others. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection preserves photographs of the actor, as well as archival documents and other materials related to Mikhail Zharov’s work.
