Leonid Sobinov was an outstanding Russian opera singer (lyric tenor), one of the greatest representatives of the Russian classical vocal school, Honored Artist of the Imperial Theatres, and People's Artist of the RSFSR. Born in 1872 in Yaroslavl into a family of a commercial clerk, he demonstrated musical abilities early on in his gymnasium choir. In 1890, he entered the Law Faculty of Moscow University, graduating successfully in 1894, after which he worked for a time as an assistant to a sworn attorney. Concurrently, from 1892, he studied vocal performance at the Music-Drama School under Alexander Dodonov and Alexandra Santagano-Gorchakova. Sobinov's theatrical career began in 1897 when, invited by conductor Ippolit Altani, he became a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre. He made his debut in Anton Rubinstein's opera "Demon". In the 1900s, the artist toured extensively, performing at Milan's La Scala theatre, as well as in Monte Carlo, Madrid, London, Berlin, and Paris. In 1918–1919, he served as the artistic director of the Kyiv Opera Theatre. Leonid Sobinov also held the position of director of the Bolshoi Theatre twice (in 1917–1918 and 1921).
