Ivan Yefimov was an artist, graphic artist, sculptor, and theatre figure. Born in Moscow, he studied at the natural sciences department of Moscow University while simultaneously training at an art studio, where his teachers included Konstantin Korovin, Valentin Serov, and others. In the early twentieth century, he worked in Savva Mamontov’s Abramtsevo ceramic workshop. He was a member of artistic associations such as “Montparnasse” and the Moscow Association of Artists. He spent several years in Europe, studied in Paris, and worked in graphic art. After the Revolution, he took part in establishing the Children’s Musical Theatre and, together with Nina Simonovich-Yefimova, founded a puppet theatre in Moscow. For many years, he taught at VKhUTEMAS and other art institutions and eventually became a professor. He worked as a sculptor, graphic artist, and theatre designer. In 1937, his sculptures received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Among his major works are the fountain at the Khimki River Station, bas-reliefs for Moscow Metro stations, and reliefs for railway stations and the Kremlin. Personal letters, puppets he created, as well as photographs and other items related to Ivan Yefimov’s work, are held in the collection of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum.
