Sergey Obraztsov was a famous Soviet artist, director, and founder of the Central Puppet Theatre.
Sergey was born on June 22, 1901 in Moscow. He studied at the Voskresensky Real School, and at Vkhutemas (in the painting department, and then in the graphic department). He was an actor at the Music Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (in 1922-1930) and at the Moscow Art Academic Theatre II (in 1930-1936).
In 1920, the artist began performing with theatre puppets and staged several shows. He even came up with his own genre which he called "parody romances with puppets".
In 1931, Sergey Obraztsov founded the Central Puppet Theatre in Moscow. He directed it for 60 years and staged many plays for children and adults, including “Unusual Concert” (1946), “Divine Comedy” (1961), and “Don Juan” (1976). Since 1948, Obraztsov toured abroad with his theatre.
He also worked as a screenwriter and film director. Together with Georgy Natanson, he staged the puppet cartoon “Heavenly Creature” (1956), based on the Central Puppet Theatre’s performances. The film received first prize at the VIII International Children's Film Festival in Venice.
In 1976-1984 Sergey Obraztsov was the president of the International Puppetry Association (Union Internationale de la Marionnette, UNIMA). Since 1955 – corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
In the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection there are materials for Sergey Obraztsov's performances – photos, sketches, archival documents, as well as images of the puppets.
