Kama Ginkas is a theatre director and People’s Artist of Russia. He studied at the acting department of the Vilnius Conservatory and later graduated from Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinema (LGITMiK) (the course of Georgy Tovstonogov) in 1967. He made his directing debut in Riga with “Traditional Gathering” by Viktor Rozov. From 1970 to 1972, he served as chief director of the Krasnoyarsk Young People’s Theatre, after which he worked in Leningrad and Moscow. Since 1988, he has been closely associated with the Moscow Young People’s Theatre. He has staged productions at the Moscow Art Theatre, the Mossovet Theatre, GITIS, and the theatre led by Oleg Tabakov. His works have been presented at international festivals in Europe, the United States, Asia, and South America. He has also directed productions abroad, including in Germany, Finland, Turkey, and the United States. In 2001, he staged the musical mystery “Polyphony of the World”, featuring renowned musicians from various countries. Kama Ginkas is the recipient of numerous theatre awards, including the Golden Mask, the Crystal Turandot, the Triumph Award, the Stanislavsky and Tovstonogov prizes, as well as the State Prize of the Russian Federation. In 2003, he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation. He teaches at the Higher School of Performing Arts (Konstantin Raikin’s Theatre School) and has conducted master classes in Europe and North America. In collaboration with John Freedman, he co-authored the book “Provoking Theatre”. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds a large number of photographs, programs, and posters related to Kama Ginkas’s productions.
