Kirill Serebrennikov is a Russian stage and film director, theatre educator, and a seminal figure in contemporary Russian theatre. Born in 1969 in Rostov-on-Don, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Physics at Rostov State University in 1992. He began directing in an amateur studio during his student years and transitioned to the professional stage in 1990. Serebrennikov's theatrical work gained wide recognition in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He directed productions at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre, including "Terrorism" and "Playing the Victim" by the Presnyakov brothers, "The Forest" by Alexander Ostrovsky, "The Golovlyov Family" by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, and "The Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht. From 2012 to 2021, he served as the artistic director of the Gogol Center in Moscow. Under his leadership, several highly resonant productions were created, including "The Idiots" based on the film by Lars von Trier, "Dead Souls" based on the poem by Nikolai Gogol, "A Common Story" based on the novel by Ivan Goncharov, and "Akhmatova. Poem Without a Hero". He is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including the Golden Mask award.
