Yevgeny Svetlanov was an outstanding Soviet and Russian conductor, composer, and pianist, People's Artist of the USSR, and Hero of Socialist Labour. Born in 1928 in Moscow, he received his musical education at the Gnessin Music School and the Gnessin Music-Pedagogical Institute (piano and composition classes). In 1951, he entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied opera and symphony conducting under Alexander Gauk and composition under Yury Shaporin. Svetlanov's theatrical career was inextricably linked to the Bolshoi Theatre. In 1955, he made his debut on its stage with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "The Maid of Pskov". From 1963 to 1965, he served as the chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre. In addition to his theatrical work, from 1965 to 2000, he was the artistic director and chief conductor of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the USSR (later Russia). With this ensemble, he completed the monumental project "Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music", recording works by Mikhail Glinka, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and many other composers.
