Boris Asafovich Messerer — scenographer and tutor. His biography has been closely related to the Bolshoi Theatre.
After graduating from Moscow Architectural Institute, Messerer debuted as a scenographer at the Sovremennik Theatre. He created set design for the Czech fairy tale “The Third Wish”, then “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “Elder Sister”, “The Assignment”. Before joining the Bolshoi Theatre, Messerer created scene design for multiple productions of the most famous Moscow theatres. There were “Sweet Bird of Youth” and “The Prince and the Pauper'' for the Moscow Art Theatre; “The Thirteen Сhairman” and "Three Ages of Casanova" for the E. Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre; “The Odd Fellow” (“Enayi”) and "The Suicide" for the Moscow Satire Theatre; “The Pokrovsky Gate” for the Moscow Drama Theatre at Malaya Bronnaya.
In 1963, Messerer was invited to the Bolshoi Theatre to create scenography for the ballet "Lieutenant Kijé". His scene design for "Carmen Suite'' was one of the most successful. The ballet was performed in Tokyo, Helsinki, Buenos Aires, Milan, and others.
Messerer designed scenography for about 200 operas and ballets, wrote memoirs and created albums. He worked with Yuri Zavadsky, Arkady Raikin, Valentin Pluchek, Anatoly Efros, Boris Pokrovsky, Oleg Yefremov.
The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum holds Messerer’s sketches of costumes and scenery for "Carmen Suite", "Lieutenant Kijé", "Sylvia", "Spartacus", "Cyrano de Bergerac", "Sweet Bird of Youth", "The Bedbug", "Three Ages of Casanova", "The Queen of Spades", "The Path of Thunder", "The Limpid Brook", “Three Musketeers”, "The Little Humpbacked Horse", "Cinderella", “Serebryany Bor”, “Unfinished Dialogue”. There are models of scenery for "Carmen Suite'', "The Good Soldier Švejk", "The Suicide", "Three Ages of Casanova", “The Tribunal”. We keep playbills, programs, photos, documents and other items related to Messerer’s work.
