Vera Vasilyeva was a Soviet and Russian stage and film actress, People’s Artist of the USSR. Born on September 30, 1925 in the village of Sukhoy Ruchey, Tver Province. She graduated from the Moscow City Theatre School in 1948. While still a student, she made her screen debut in a small role in the film “Twins” (1945). Her first major role was in Ivan Pyryev’s film “The Tale of the Siberian Land” (1947), which earned her the Stalin Prize (First Class). From 1948 until the end of her life, she was a member of the Moscow Academic Theatre of Satire, where she performed more than 70 roles. She also appeared on the stages of the Maly Theatre, the Modern Theatre, the Obraztsov Puppet Theatre, and other venues. Over the course of her career, she acted in more than 40 films. She was married to actor Vladimir Ushakov (1920–2011), who also served at the Theatre of Satire. She authored four memoir books, including “Continuation of the Soul” and “Cinderella from Chistye Prudy”. The Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection holds a large number of photographs of Vasilyeva both in her stage roles and in everyday life, as well as personal belongings related to her career.
