Zinaida Reich was an outstanding Soviet actress and one of the leading artists of the Meyerhold Theatre. Born in 1894 in Odessa, she studied at the Higher Women's Courses in Kyiv, and later at the Higher Women's Historical-Literary and Legal Courses of Nikolai Raev in Petrograd, where she additionally took sculpture lessons and studied foreign languages. From 1917 to 1921, she was married to Sergei Yesenin; they had two children together. In 1921, Zinaida Reich enrolled in the State Experimental Theatre Workshops in Moscow, headed by Vsevolod Meyerhold. In 1922, the actress and the director married. Reich's performing style was distinguished by vivid stage expressiveness, plasticity, temperament, and the ability to embody complex, contradictory characters. Among her landmark roles were: Aksyusha ("The Forest", 1924), Anna Andreyevna ("The Government Inspector", 1926), Sofya ("Woe from Wit", 1928), Stella ("The Magnanimous Cuckold", 1928), and Marguerite Gautier ("The Lady of the Camellias", 1934).
