Maya Plisetskaya was an outstanding ballerina, ballet master, choreographer, and prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre, People's Artist of the USSR. Born in 1925 in Moscow, she was adopted in childhood by her aunt, the ballerina Sulamith Messerer, who introduced her to the choreographic school. In 1943, Maya graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School under the guidance of Elizaveta Gerdt and Maria Leontyeva. Even during the evacuation to Sverdlovsk, her first performance of "The Dying Swan" took place. That same year, she joined the troupe of the Bolshoi Theatre, where she soon established herself as a prima ballerina. Her stage path was marked by triumphant performances not only in the USSR but also abroad, including major tours in the USA, the UK, France, and Italy. She remained the leading soloist of the theatre until 1990, going down in history as one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century. The online collection of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum holds materials related to the life and work of Maya Plisetskaya and her unique contribution to the development of Russian and world choreographic art. In 2022, Maya Plisetskaya Apartment Museum opened on Tverskaya Street in Moscow, becoming a branch of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum. The exposition carefully preserves the lifetime interior and includes many items from the family archive of Maya Plisetskaya and Rodion Shchedrin: ballet costumes, unique photographs, works of art, and personal belongings that reveal the creative path and daily life of the great artist.
