Annotation
Theatre.doc is an independent documentary theatre founded in 2002 by Elena Gremina and Mikhail Ugarov. It pioneered the “new drama” movement in Russia, which is focused on artistic interpretation of modern reality. As the first Russian theatre to fully adopt the verbatim technique, it stages performances based on word-for-word transcripts of real-life interviews. The core of the theatre’s repertoire features documentary materials (including diaries, original texts, interviews, and personal testimonies), which highlight social problems, contemplate contemporary topics, and explore diverse communities’ experiences.. The theatre has partnered with leading contemporary playwrights (Dmitry Danilov, Sasha Denisova, Lyubov Mulmenko) and directors (Ivan Vyrypaev, Vsevolod Lisovsky, Georg Geno, Dmitry Volkostrelov). Theatre.doc's performances participated in Russian and international festivals and were awarded by the Golden Mask ("Oxygen", “Life is Good”, “Light My Fire”, “Akyn Opera”, “The Man from Podolsk”), "Most Creative Theatre" award by the Creative magazine (2003), the Stalker film festival award (2005). In the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum collection there are posters, programs and production photographs of the Theatre.doc's performances.
