In October 1894, Russian Emperor Alexander III died in the Livadia Palace, the Crimean residence of the Royal family. His eldest son Nicholas II ascended the throne. By the Supreme Manifesto of January 1, 1896, the Holy Coronation was scheduled for May 1896.
The period from 6 to 26 May 1896 was dedicated to this great event. The program of the festival included, among other events, a ceremonial performance at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. The performance dedicated to the coronation of Nicholas II included the first act and the epilogue of Mikhail Glinka's patriotic opera "A Life for the Tsar" and the ballet performance "Pretty Pearl".
