The fire that broke out in Brest-Litovsk on 4 May 1895 became notorious for its devastating scale: a wall of flames stretching for some two kilometres destroyed much of the city and left half of its residents homeless. A poster advertising a performance by amateur actors in Nizhny Novgorod stands out for its subtitle, “For the benefit of the fire victims of Brest-Litovsk.” It is particularly unusual for the substantial excerpt from the newspaper Odessky Listok printed on the poster. Positioned in the lower section, the excerpt is highlighted by pointing-hand symbols known as manicules. The text was presented as a “telegram,” emphasising the urgency of the news and drawing the reader into the immediacy of the disaster, while encouraging them to make whatever contribution they could to the common relief effort.
