Playbill
19 February 1880
Paper, printing
45х30
A playbill for an amateur performance in Velsk records a collection “for the benefit of the families of lower-ranking servicemen who who were affected by the explosion of 5 February 1880.” The explosion in the Winter Palace became one of the most widely discussed political events of the final years of Alexander II’s reign. Since lower-ranking members of the guard were killed and wounded in the assassination attempt, assistance to their families became a matter not only of state care, but also of public charity. The Velsk playbill may therefore be regarded as a form of provincial society’s participation in aiding the victims of a terrorist attack in the capital.
